Tackling Youth Unemployment in Chhattisgarh Through Skill Development and Self-Employment Opportunities

Youth unemployment in Chhattisgarh is a serious issue, especially in rural and backward regions. Despite having educational qualifications, many young people struggle to find suitable jobs due to a lack of industry-relevant skills, limited access to training, and poor awareness of available government schemes. The state’s limited industrial growth and overdependence on traditional farming offer few job opportunities. Economic challenges and migration also add pressure, leaving many youths directionless and financially insecure. This growing gap between education and employment continues to hinder the progress of Chhattisgarh’s youth.

Addressing youth unemployment in Chhattisgarh requires a multi-dimensional approach focused on skill development, entrepreneurship, and awareness programs. First, there is a need to establish more skill development centers that offer training in trades such as electrical work, plumbing, computer operations, mobile repair, digital marketing, and tailoring—skills that are in demand locally and nationally. These should be accessible and affordable, especially for rural youth.

Second, promoting self-employment and entrepreneurship is a powerful tool. With proper guidance and small financial support, youth can start micro-enterprises such as food stalls, beauty parlors, mobile repair shops, tailoring units, or organic farming projects. Government schemes like PMEGP (Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme), MUDRA loans, and Start-Up India offer funding and mentorship, but more awareness and handholding support are needed to ensure these schemes reach the right people.

Present Employment Options:

  1. Skill Development Programs – Offered under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) and Chhattisgarh State Skill Development Authority (CSSDA), these provide industry-relevant training and certification.

  2. Self-Employment Schemes – PMEGP, MUDRA Loans, and DAY-NULM (for urban poor) offer financial support for youth-led businesses.

  3. Government and Contractual Jobs – Opportunities exist in Panchayat departments, forest department, health missions, and education sector, especially under state-run employment drives.

  4. Agricultural & Allied Enterprises – Youth can explore organic farming, dairy, poultry, and fisheries, which are being supported by government incentives.

  5. Digital & Freelance Jobs – With digital literacy, youth can explore jobs in content creation, data entry, graphic design, and online tutoring through platforms like Upwork, Freelancer, and local businesses.

  6. NGO and Community Initiatives – Organizations like Anant Manorama Rudram Baal evam Mahila Vikash Samiti can play a key role in conducting workshops, entrepreneurship training, and connecting youth with employment schemes.

Solving youth unemployment in Chhattisgarh is not just about creating jobs but about creating opportunities to learn, grow, and contribute. With the right mix of training, support, and awareness, young people can overcome barriers and build a stable, self-reliant future for themselves and their communities.
